First flew in Fall 1969 as a student loadmaster with the 14th MAS (Norton AFB) and finished as an instructor loadmaster with the reserve wing at Norton AFB in 1974.

Early in 1973, I was at DaNang the morning the truce went into effect in Vietman unloading a K-loader; and in November 1973, flew a mission to Israel (Operation Nickel Grass) for the Yom Kippur War.

The message I sent a few minutes is entirely true. I was the second driver after the first guy failed to follow the rules for crossing the active taxiway and runway. This was the second time I was sent to finish a job for somebody else. The first was going out to where a fellow airman had major burns to his hands after a flash fire. I never saw him again as he medevacked out, but it never left my memory. He was a great guy to work with.

I was involved in a near miss at Homestead AFB, 1973, A fellow POL refueler driver failed to follow the protocal for crossing the active runway and was stopped on the active runway and was stopped by the security police. I was returning from filling my R-5 refueler and told to park my truck and get into a pickup by my dispatcher. The supervisor was to take me to the refueler on the runway. A C-141 was inbound and had declared an emergency. By the time we reached the refueler, and I jumped in the refueler cab, I could see the landing lights and was trying hard to clear the runway. Just as I cleared the runway the C-141 went by in my rear view mirrors. I delivered a little fuel to the test cell and then was sent to the C-141
to refuel it. The crew was waiting for me
. After I positioned the truck I got out of the cab and was greeted by the crew. They thought I wasn't going to clear the runway in time. What a welcome! I was scared as heck. I explained I was the second driver and wasn't given any other option other than get the truck off the runway. The shortcut between the taxiway and the runway was filled with emergency equipment. The next C-141 I saw was December,1974 at midnight at Hahn Air Base, Germany.

I was a crew chief on 65-0251 from 1967 to December 1968. About 2003 as I was driving past Davis Monthan on the southside. The girl was there being dismantled. It was a sad moment for me and it brought back a lot of memories. Some good and some bad. My girl 65-0251 will always be a happy memory.

Update to my post of 24 Feb 2018, re: locate anyone who served w/ Lt. Col Aaron Cantor (deceased), retired early 1970's with 30 years of service. I have recently come across information that he may have had a son sharing the same name who served a generation later in the C-141, as an NCO, flight engineer. The "son" served active duty from the mid-70's to the mid-'90's. He had multiple C-141 duty assignments at both McChord AFB and McGuire AFB. I wish to connect with anyone who served with father or son. Thanks, Greg Hall, 82nd Airborne Division, Viet Nam-era, e-mail: gmhall82@gmail.com .

I'm a private pilot. I first saw a C 141 between layers near Grand Rapids in the early 80's. I was just getting my instrument ticket wet in my Cheetah. Approach, knowing that I was between layers advised that I might see a Star lifter ahead descending. I called the sighting to Approach and the pilot of the Starlifter jumped on the frequency with"Isn't she beautiful !" I knew you guys were loving it . thanks to all of you for serving this blessed land. As an engineer I'll never understand why they didn't re-engine that aircraft. With the high wing and modern engines it should have been a piece of cake.

(3320) I am an Army guy who, with the help of Mike Novack’s C141 Heaven website and the USAF Safety Center at Kirtland AFB, NM, finally uncovered the events of January, 1967 which remain firmly etched in my memory. That month I boarded a USAF C-141 Starlifter Tail Number 65-0230 at Travis AFB to Vietnam. I was one of 96 Army passengers and the only officer: a second lieutenant, age 19 with about three months’ time in grade.

The aircraft was configured with passenger seats; not the type you find in a commercial airliner, but aluminum frame seats facing rearward. I was seated in the last row facing the cargo pallet about six feet away.

An uneventful flight all the way to Wake Island. A smooth departure and as the C-141 began to level off at cruising altitude a horrendous blast occurred! The fuselage instantly filled with white “smoke”, bells started clanging and things not tied down flew out what I saw was a gaping hole in the back of the aircraft.

The flight crew was extraordinary! After a few moments of abject terror the aircraft returns to Wake Island without incident. If any of these gentlemen peruse this site, I wish to say “thank you” for your professionalism and calm demeanor.

A couple of days later, we boarded another C-141 and off to Vietnam for some real fun and adventure!

This wasn’t my last trip in a C-141 but by far, the most memorable.

Thank you for creating this website. I'm a retired 605/2T2 and spent many years on active duty with 141s. In my mind the best airlifter ever built. I was also a MAC Phase II unit instructor and evaluator on the C-141A/B. I miss the sound of her, the sight of her flying, and the feel of working her.. Damn shame she's been retired..
