My Grandmother's Blog - May 26-31, 1924

May 26, 1924

The above entry, written by my grandfather on the date of my mother's birth says:

Monday's Child is fair of face! Molly Price (8'7")
is safely born at 10:30am. Frances says
"My Sister!" A whole Te Deum.
A new world. New Love, New Hope.

For all of my life, and my father's time with my mother, we knew her as Molly Helen Johnson. The diary entry, made on the date of her birth by my grandfather, Carl W. Johnson, shows the name of the new child as Molly Price! We have no idea where that comes from. As far as we know, there were no Price's in the 'family tree' on either my grandfather's or grandmother's side of the family. (There is a reference to a Price here and there throughout the rest of the diary, but we don't know who this is at this point.) There are some theories we have developed to explain how her name might have changed from Molly Price to Molly Helen ... and these are explored later on in more detail.

My grandfather continues to make the first few entries.

Molly 1 day old. The beautiful car - 4 days old.
Molly's mama very comfortable. Ten Dyke
helpful. All anxiety past.

I have no idea who "Ten Dyke" is...perhaps a nurse?

May 28, 1924

Last of a night nurse. Molly the only one to
miss her. Lovely flowers, good letters - telegrams
of contratulations. C.W. off to Chicago.

May 29, 1924

C.W. on deck for the important Board
Meeting. Molly so accommodating in
her plans. Frances lonely.

I have no idea what the "important Board Meeting" is all about.

Frances is my mother's sister (6 years old at this time).

May 30, 1924

Frances to Parade with Adele
Dad back to surprise "Sis" and "Sister"
All well in Chicago .. also Room K -
Weather - cold.

I'm guessing Room K is the room where my grandmother was staying at the hospital.

May 31, 1924

Saturday.
Much gained (???) over week ago.
Molly with so much brown hair looks
very grown up. Many friendly attentions.
Mama finding a live baby doll a beautiful thrill.
